The components here can vary considerably, yet the style remains remarkably consistent. One year may find us with the solution provided largely by Marsanne and Roussanne, while another will see an important role for Chardonnay, but there are usually important, if invisible roles being played by such things as Sauvignon, Grenache Blanc and even Petit Manseng for extra freshness and acidity.

Currently from the 2018 vintage, the base for this is provided by Merlot grapes, with important contributions coming also from Cabernet Franc and some Petit Verdot which seems always to add a subtle magic “X Factor” to the mix here. It is vastly superior to much, we might even say most, of the basic quality Bordeaux Rouge on the market whose dominant character seems so often dominated by a harsh astringency. The Mediterranean climate near Montpellier is a greater guarantee of grape maturity than the Atlantic influence near the Gironde estuary.

We have reduced the percentage of Syrah with the 2018 vintage edition, opting instead for a significant majority of Petit Verdot, resulting in improvement in flavour, balance and overall style.

The Little Owl (Athena Noctua), emblem of Athena, goddess of wisdom and tutelary deity of Athens, appears on the reverse of 5th century BC Attic tetradrachm coins, the common currency at the peak of the city state’s prosperity under the leadership of Pericles. Its aimiable image is the one we have chosen to adopt for the “Sagesse” range of wines, associating the wise bird with the French word for wisdom.

We thus dare to suggest that the wines themselves are a wise choice on the part of the buyer, providing an alternative to big brands that deceive the consumer into a false sense of security by spending more on the marketing than on the actual grapes.

Sagesse wines are designed with discerning drinkers in mind, those who demand more than standardised and sterilised beverages made in industrial quantities from processed grapes in a faceless factory. They cater instead for those in search of a reliable and refreshing libation with which to digest and enliven the daily diet, perhaps even providing a source of relaxed inspiration. We might dare hope that the god of wine, Dionysus himself, would have approved!

The current Sagesse range consists of three admirable wines, red, white and rosé, all produced from vines growing in the Languedoc region of southern France. There are two predominant soils, one volcanic in origin, the other largely limestone based.

Tried and tested by us over the past 25 years, they have proved to be a reliably delicious source of satisfaction, made from a wide variety of compatible grape varieties, the blend liable to variation with each vintage, yet remaining seamlessly consistent in character. We would stress that these are not self important wines that search for maximum expression, quite the reverse, for the palate is swiftly fatigued by such things. The goal instead is to achieve a style of sophisticated understatement, polite rather than point-scoring, quiet rather than noisy, yet never merely dull. These particular wines therefore expressly avoid having any obvious single varietal signature.

Sagesse wines are thus confidently proposed as the solution for anyone in search of an upmarket, yet easily affordable, house wine for all seasons.

Future Developments:

We plan to extend the range gradually as and when we see good potential in certain single varieties in particular vintages. You may therefore expect to see such things as Grenache Blanc, or Petit Verdot appearing before long.
